Johannes Edvaldsson (nicknamed Shuggie) was born on 3rd September 1950 in Reykjavik, Iceland. Son of Evald Mikson Estonian International goalkeeper.
Johannes started his professional career with Valur in 1968 – 1971 playing in the European Cup losing to Benfica in the 1968/69 season. Johannes made 50 appearances scoring 15 goals in 3 seasons before joining Cape Town City in 1972 on loan where he made 10 appearances scoring twice. He returned to Valur the following season playing 42 times and scoring 13 goals.
His next move was to France signing for FC Metz in 1974 but things didn’t work out there and he signed for Danish side Holbaek B & I finishing Runner up in the Danish League and Danish Cup in 1975.
After a brief trial Johannes signed for Celtic on the 8th August 1975 by stand in manager Sean Fallon as Jock Stein was recovering from a serious car accident. His versatility in playing many positions was a real asset to Celtic but he mainly played a central defensive role. It was at Celtic that he was nicknamed Shuggie by the fans.
In his first domestic season Shuggie made his home debut playing against Aberdeen in an attacking midfield role, he established himself in the team with solid performances. Celtic finished runner up in the League Championship and were beaten by Motherwell in the 4rd round of the Scottish Cup.
In the 1976/77 season Shuggie helped Celtic to the League Championship double beating Rangers in the League and Scottish cup final. Losing to Aberdeen in the League Cup final 2-1 after extra time.
In 1978 Shuggie scored his only goal against Rangers at Ibrox in a bad tempered match when the Celtic players had to be stopped from walking off the park due to the performance of the referee.
In 1979 Shuggie was used sparingly by then Manager Billy McNeil and after a fall out he decided to leave which was a huge disappointment to the Celtic support. He won the League Championship twice and the Scottish cup in his 5 years at Parkhead. He moved across the pond to the USA.
On the 2nd February 1980 Edvaldsson signed for the North American Super League team Tulsa Roughnecks spending the one season making 68 appearances scoring 17 goals, he then returned to Europe with the German side Hannover 96 making 21 appearances and scoring 1 goal.
In 1982 Edvaldsson came back to Scotland and was signed by the admiring Jock Wallace for Motherwell. He went on to make 65 appearances in the Claret and amber scoring 6 goals.
Johannes retired from playing football after the 1984 season and went into coaching. He coached Prottur in his homeland for a year before returning to live in Scotland. Johannes suffered a brain haemorrhage in 1995 but made a full recovery. He went on to coach with the Jimmy Johnstone Acadamy.
Johannes was capped 34 times for Iceland in a 12 year International Career scoring twice for his country.
He later became a publican in a well known bar in Bridgeton
In one match, Shuggy scored an og from 35yrds or more, and at half-time Jock Stein made the shape of goals with his hands and making a circle shape of the goals at the other end! "Good Johannes!"
Johannes turned to him and said in his best accent (remembering his English wasn't great at the time): "Aye but it was some goal boss!!"
Everyone gasped waiting on Jock's reply, but Jock just shook his head and walked away.
Johannes Edvaldsson passed away on the 24th January 2021 after a short Illness.
